Download a YouTube thumbnail in HD, from any link
This YouTube thumbnail downloader gets the cover image of any public video without screenshots or cropping: paste the link of a video, a Short or a live stream, and you instantly get every version YouTube publishes, from the small 120 × 90 icon to the HD thumbnail in 1280 × 720 (maxresdefault). Each file shows its real dimensions and file size, so you know exactly what you are saving before you click.
Everything happens in your browser: the link is analysed locally and the images come straight from YouTube’s own image server, with no YouTube API, account or extension. You can download a JPG, copy the image to paste it into Canva, Photoshop or a slide, copy its direct URL, or process up to 20 videos at once and get them all in a single ZIP file.
-
Paste the link
Copy the address of the video on YouTube (Share button, address bar or YouTube Studio), then paste it into the “YouTube video link or ID” field, or click “Paste”. A Shorts, live or embed link works too, as does the 11-character ID on its own.
-
Get the thumbnails
The search starts by itself when you paste a link; otherwise click “Get thumbnails” or press Enter. “Try an example” loads a sample video if you just want to see how it works.
-
Choose the size
The large preview shows the “Best available” version, with “Download (JPG)”, “Copy image” and “Copy link”. Under “All sizes”, each card has its own “Download”, “Link” and “Image” buttons, plus an “Open” link to the lighter WebP version.
-
Explore the frames and Shorts covers
Open “Frames extracted by YouTube” to see the three stills YouTube generates automatically, at full size when available. For a Short, the vertical cover comes first when YouTube publishes one.
-
Process several videos
Put one link per line (Shift+Enter), up to 20: each video gets a row with its best thumbnail and a “Details” button, and “Download all (ZIP)” saves them all in one file.
How the thumbnail downloader works
Every YouTube video has an 11-character ID, such as dQw4w9WgXcQ. YouTube stores the thumbnails of that video at predictable addresses on its image server, for example i.ytimg.com/vi/ID/maxresdefault.jpg. The tool therefore only has to find the ID in your link, then check which of these files really exist.
- Reading the link: the ID is extracted from
watch?v=,youtu.be/,/shorts/,/embed/,/live/,m.youtube.com,music.youtube.com, YouTube Studio or thumbnail URLs, whatever extra parameters they carry (t=,list=,si=). - Checking each size: when a size does not exist, YouTube answers with an error and a small 120 × 90 placeholder image; the tool detects it and shows “Not available” instead of an empty picture.
- Real data: the dimensions and file size displayed come from the file actually received, not from theoretical values.
- WebP variants: YouTube also publishes most sizes in WebP under
/vi_webp/, often lighter than the JPG; they open in a new tab, where you save them. - Downloads: files are named
youtube-ID-maxres.jpg,youtube-ID-hq.jpgand so on, and the ZIP of a batch is built in your browser.
YouTube thumbnail sizes: which file to choose
| File | Dimensions and ratio | Availability | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
maxresdefault.jpg | 1280 × 720 (16:9) | Some videos only; often missing on old or low-resolution videos | Reuse, editing, slides |
sddefault.jpg | 640 × 480 (4:3) | Some videos only | Good quality when HD is missing |
hqdefault.jpg | 480 × 360 (4:3) | Standard size, present for every video | Reliable fallback, previews |
mqdefault.jpg | 320 × 180 (16:9) | Standard size, present for every video | Lists and small cards, no black bars |
default.jpg | 120 × 90 (4:3) | Standard size, present for every video | Icons, legibility test at tiny size |
oardefault.jpg | Often 1080 × 1920 (9:16) | Some Shorts only; undocumented file | Vertical cover of a Short |
According to the YouTube Data API documentation, thumbnails are resized without cropping and may include black bars: the 4:3 sizes of a 16:9 video therefore have bands at the top and bottom. Only maxresdefault and mqdefault are true 16:9.
If you are a creator, keep in mind that this 1280 × 720 file is a copy resized and recompressed by YouTube. For your own uploads, the YouTube Help Center currently (2026) recommends a thumbnail as large as possible: 3840 × 2160 for videos (at least 640 pixels wide, ideally 16:9) and 2160 × 3840 for Shorts, in a format such as JPG or PNG, up to 50 MB from a computer or 2 MB from a phone. Keep your original files: a downloaded thumbnail is no substitute for them.
What creators use a thumbnail grabber for
- Recover your own thumbnail when the original file is lost, to reuse it in a post, on your other social accounts or in a remake of the video.
- Build a swipe file: collect the thumbnails of your niche to study colours, faces, text and composition before designing yours.
- Prepare a report or a pitch: agencies and editors put thumbnails in client reports, briefs and presentations, with the source credited.
- Test legibility: compare your HD thumbnail with its 320 × 180 and 120 × 90 versions, close to what viewers see in lists and on phones.
- Illustrate an article about a video: a blog or newsletter that discusses a video can show its thumbnail as a link to it, provided the use is allowed (your own video, the creator’s permission or a legal exception).
Common problems and fixes
- “Not available” on the maximum resolution: the video has no
maxresdefault, which is common for old or low-resolution uploads. Takesddefaultorhqdefault, the best size actually published. - Black bars at the top and bottom: you picked a 4:3 size (SD, HQ or Small). Choose maximum resolution or MQ, which are true 16:9, or crop the image.
- The old thumbnail still shows: the creator may have just changed it, and caches can keep the previous image for a while (the image server currently allows caching for up to two hours); it may also be an A/B test, where several thumbnails are shown at the same time. Try again later.
- “This is a channel link” or a playlist message: a channel, playlist or clip address contains no video ID. Open the video itself and copy its link.
- The download is blocked: the tool then opens the image in a new tab; save it from there (on a phone, long-press the image) or use “Copy image”.
Privacy: the link you paste is analysed in your browser and is never sent to clic.tools; the only requests go from your browser to YouTube’s image server (i.ytimg.com), and nothing is stored. Limits: the tool only sees the images YouTube publishes publicly, so the largest standard thumbnail is 1280 × 720; the vertical Shorts files (oardefault, oar1 to oar3) are not officially documented and may change. Thumbnails remain the property of their creators. YouTube is a trademark of Google LLC; this independent tool is unofficial and not affiliated with YouTube.
Frequently asked questions
How do I download the thumbnail of a YouTube video?
Copy the video link from YouTube, paste it into the field above and the tool instantly shows every available size. Click Download under the version you want: the HD one (maxresdefault, 1280 × 720) when it exists, otherwise SD or HQ. It works the same way for Shorts, live streams and embedded videos, without an account or extension.
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
The largest standard file YouTube publishes is maxresdefault, 1280 × 720 pixels in 16:9; the smaller versions measure 640 × 480, 480 × 360, 320 × 180 and 120 × 90. To upload your own, the YouTube Help Center currently recommends an image as large as possible, ideally 3840 × 2160, at least 640 pixels wide and under 50 MB from a computer or 2 MB from a phone. For Shorts, the recommendation is 2160 × 3840 in 9:16.
Why is the HD thumbnail (maxresdefault) not available?
YouTube only generates the 1280 × 720 and 640 × 480 versions for some videos, as its developer documentation states. They are often missing on old or low-resolution uploads, such as Me at the zoo, the very first video posted in 2005. In that case, hqdefault (480 × 360) is the best version YouTube publishes, and no tool can get a larger one.
Is it legal to download a YouTube thumbnail?
Saving a thumbnail for personal reference is generally fine, but the image is protected by copyright just like the video, and it belongs to its creator. You can freely reuse your own thumbnails; for someone else’s, you need the creator’s permission or a legal exception such as fair use in the United States or the right of quotation in Europe, which are narrow. Never present it as your own work or use it to imitate a channel.
How do I get the thumbnail of a YouTube Short?
Paste the Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/…) as you would for any video. The tool shows the usual horizontal sizes, where YouTube often centres the vertical image on a blurred background, and, when it exists, the vertical cover in 9:16, usually 1080 × 1920, which then becomes the main preview. The “Frames extracted by YouTube” section opens automatically with three stills, mostly vertical and full size. On the creator side, a custom Shorts thumbnail can currently only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer.
Why is the thumbnail different from the one I see on YouTube?
Creators can change their thumbnail at any time, and caches may keep the previous version for a while. With the A/B test in YouTube Studio, up to three thumbnails can also be shown to different viewers at the same time. Finally, the Shorts feed shows a vertical image, and on mobile a vertical video with a 16:9 thumbnail may appear on the Home and Subscriptions pages with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail.
