Difficulty and directions
Words to find

Play on screen: drag from the first to the last letter of a word, or tap them one after the other (keyboard: arrow keys, then Enter).

ℹ️ Everything is generated in your browser: your words are never uploaded or stored. “New layout” shuffles a different arrangement of the same words.

Make a printable word search in seconds

A word search is a grid of letters hiding words in straight lines: across, down, diagonally and sometimes backwards. This word search maker builds the puzzle from your own word list (this week’s spelling words, your students’ names, a birthday theme) and also prepares the answer key and an optional secret message hidden in the leftover letters.

Play on paper or right on the screen: drag your finger or mouse from the first to the last letter of a word (or tap one, then the other) and it is crossed off the list; your time is shown once every word is found. Teachers, speech therapists, activity coordinators, parents and puzzle fans get a fast tool with no sign-up and no watermark.

    1. Enter your words

In “Words to hide”, type up to 40 words of 2 to 25 letters, one per line or separated by commas, and name the sheet in “Puzzle title”. Duplicates and words in another alphabet are flagged.

    2. Set the difficulty

Choose “Easy” (→ ↓), “Medium” (adds diagonals) or “Hard” (adds backwards words), or tick the directions yourself. Leave “Grid size” on “Automatic” or force a size from 8 × 8 to 25 × 25, and choose how to handle “Accents”.

    3. Customize

If you like, type a hidden word in “Secret message (optional)”, switch to lowercase letters, tick “Add a Name and Date line” for a classroom worksheet and click “New layout” until you like the arrangement.

    4. Print or play

“Print puzzle” opens a print-ready page, “Print with answer key” adds the solution on a second page and “Download PNG” saves an image. Tick “Show solution” to see every word circled on screen: the button then becomes “Download answer key (PNG)”.

How the generator builds the grid

Each puzzle comes from a reproducible random draw: the same list, settings and seed always give the same grid, and “New layout” simply draws another seed. Placement follows five steps:

    1. Cleaning: every word is uppercased; spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and digits are removed, and accents are handled according to your choice.
    2. Automatic size: the grid must hold the longest word and aims for words to fill roughly 40 to 60% of the squares, depending on the number of directions (8 × 8 at least); if a word or the secret message does not fit, it grows one square at a time, up to 25 × 25.
    3. Backtracking placement: the longest words go first, at a random position and in a random direction; two words may cross on a shared letter but never overlap along the same line. When it gets stuck, the algorithm backs up and tries another position.
    4. Filler letters: empty squares get letters drawn 60% from the letter frequencies of your words and 40% from the whole alphabet, so no rare letter gives a word away.
    5. Duplicate check: if the filler accidentally spells a second copy of a word, those letters are redrawn so that, as far as possible, each word appears only once.

Which grid size for which age?

Ways to use word search puzzles

    • In the classroom: review spelling lists, sight words or unit vocabulary, with the printed answer key for self-checking.
    • Language learning: hide French, Spanish or German words from a lesson; the tool handles accents, Ñ, umlauts and even Cyrillic.
    • Parties and events: themed grids for birthdays, Christmas, weddings or baby showers, with a secret message that reveals a surprise.
    • Activities for all ages: a 10 × 10 grid prints with big letters, handy for senior activity sessions, and a few sheets keep kids busy on a long road trip.
    • Newsletters and print media: a puzzle for a school paper, club newsletter or welcome booklet, exported as a PNG to drop into any document.

    Common problems and fixes

    • “Not placed” warning: the grid is too small for the list. Switch to “Automatic”, enlarge the grid or tick more directions.
    • A word looks merged: spaces and hyphens are removed, so “ice cream” becomes ICECREAM. The printed list keeps the space for readability.
    • Nothing opens when printing: the browser blocked the print window. Allow pop-ups for this site, then click again.
    • The puzzle is too easy: choose “Hard”, tick “Print without the word list” or add words that share many letters.
    • Secret message too long: there are not enough free squares left. Shorten it or use a bigger grid.

Privacy: the puzzle is generated entirely in your browser; your words are never uploaded or stored, and everything is gone when you close the page (print or download the PNG first). Limits: 40 words of 2 to 25 letters, grids from 8 × 8 to 25 × 25, one alphabet per puzzle (Latin, Cyrillic, Greek or Japanese kana; kanji are not supported).

    Frequently asked questions

How do I make a printable word search?

Type your words in “Words to hide”, one per line or separated by commas, and pick a difficulty. The puzzle updates instantly: “Print puzzle” gives you the activity sheet and “Print with answer key” adds a second page with every word circled. “New layout” reshuffles the same words into a different grid.

What grid size is right for a child?

For early readers (ages 5 to 6), an 8 × 8 grid with 5 to 8 short words running only left to right and top to bottom works well. Around ages 9 to 11, a 12 × 12 grid with 10 to 15 words and diagonals is a good challenge. Leave the size on “Automatic” and the tool picks a grid that suits the number and length of your words.

Why were some words not placed?

A word longer than the grid cannot fit, and a grid that is too small for the list eventually runs out of room. The tool then lists the missing words: choose a larger size or “Automatic”, tick more directions or remove a few words. In automatic mode the grid grows by itself, up to 25 × 25, until everything fits.

How are accents and special letters handled?

By default accents are removed (É becomes E, Ñ becomes N), as in most printed puzzles, and spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are dropped, so “ice cream” becomes ICECREAM. Choose “Keep accents” to keep them in the grid. Extra options follow German (Ä becomes AE) and Spanish (Ñ kept) conventions, and the tool also accepts Polish letters, Cyrillic, Greek and Japanese kana.

How do I make a word search with a hidden message?

Type the message in “Secret message (optional)”: its letters fill the first free squares, reading left to right and top to bottom. Once every word has been found, the solver reads the first leftover letters in order to reveal it. The printed sheet shows one blank per letter, the answer key spells it out, and on screen it appears as soon as the last word is found.

How do I save the puzzle as a PDF, and are my words uploaded?

Click “Print puzzle” and choose “Save as PDF” as the printer in your browser’s print dialog, or download a PNG image instead. Everything is computed in your browser: the word list is never sent to a server and is gone once you close the page.
