Instagram line breaks that stay where you put them
You write a tidy caption in short paragraphs, hit Share, and Instagram glues everything into one block. This Instagram line break generator rewrites your text so the layout survives: every blank line gets an invisible character that Instagram keeps, stray spaces at the ends of lines are removed, and you can turn dashes into bullets or push your hashtags below the caption. The live preview shows the result as a post, or as a profile for your bio.
The counters check the limits that matter while you type: 2,200 characters for a caption, 150 for a bio, the 5-hashtag cap Instagram announced in December 2025 and 20 mentions. Everything runs in your browser: the text is formatted on your device and never uploaded, so you can safely prepare captions for clients or for a launch that is still under wraps.
-
Choose the format
Under “Format for”, pick “Caption (post or reel)” or “Profile bio”. The limits, the counters and the preview adapt to your choice.
-
Paste your text
Type or paste it into “Your text”, with an empty line wherever you want space between paragraphs. “Example” loads a sample for the chosen format and “Clear” empties the field.
-
Adjust the options
Keep the Braille blank in “Character for blank lines” or pick another one, leave “Remove spaces at the end of lines” checked, and use “Spacer lines before the final hashtags” to push your hashtags down.
-
Check the preview
Read the post or profile preview and the counters. Check “Feed view” to see roughly what appears before “more”, then fix any warning that shows up.
-
Copy and publish
Click “Copy text” and paste the result into Instagram. Then open the published post to check the spacing, since behavior can differ between app versions.
How the Instagram line break generator works
Instagram publishes no rules about blank lines. The workaround used by creators and social media tools rests on one observation: a line that contains a character, visible or not, is kept, while an empty line, or a line break preceded by a space, may be collapsed. The tool applies these steps to your text, in this order:
- Line endings are normalized (Windows, classic Mac and Unicode separators all become plain line breaks), so the result pastes the same way everywhere.
- Optionally, emoji are removed and dashes, asterisks or plus signs followed by a space at the start of a line become
•bullets. - Spaces at the end of every line are deleted, including non-breaking and zero-width spaces.
- If you chose spacer lines (captions only), the block of hashtags at the end moves to its own line, below the number of spacer lines you picked.
- Empty lines at the very beginning and end are dropped, and every remaining empty line receives the chosen character, by default the Braille blank
U+2800. Lines that only hold an invisible character, a period or a middle dot count as empty too, so you can safely reformat a caption that is already spaced out.
The counters measure the formatted text, because that is what Instagram receives. Characters are counted in UTF-16 units, the way most phone apps count: a letter, accented or not, or a Japanese character counts as 1, most emoji as 2, an emoji with a skin tone or a flag as 4. Instagram does not document its own method, so treat the total as a close estimate and keep a small margin near the limit.
Which character to use for blank lines on Instagram
| Character | Code | What followers see | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Braille blank | U+2800 | Nothing (a Braille cell with no dots) | Default choice: Unicode classifies it as a symbol, not a space, so space cleanup leaves it in place |
| Hangul filler | U+3164 | Nothing in most apps, a box or wide gap with some fonts | Alternative to try if the Braille blank misbehaves on your device |
| Middle dot | U+00B7 | A small centered dot · | Discreet and always kept, but visible |
| Period | U+002E | A dot . | The classic “dot ladder” for pushing hashtags down; always kept |
| Zero-width space | U+200B | Nothing | Not offered: a format character (Unicode category Cf), the kind that text cleanup often strips, which can leave the line empty again |
| Plain space or empty line | U+0020 | Nothing | The cause of the problem: trailing spaces and empty lines are exactly what Instagram tends to collapse |
Every spacer counts as 1 character toward the 2,200-character limit (150 for a bio): a caption with 10 paragraphs spends 9 characters on spacing. Whatever the character, check the published post, because Instagram can change how it handles text without notice.
When to use an Instagram caption formatter
- Storytelling captions: short paragraphs separated by white space read far better on a phone than a single wall of text.
- Recipes, tutorials and checklists: ingredients or steps as
•bullets, one per line, with a blank line before the method. - Multi-line bios: what you do, where you are and how to reach you, each on its own line, all within 150 characters.
- Hashtags below the caption: a few spacer lines push your 5 hashtags past “more” in the truncated feed view.
- Captions drafted elsewhere: text written in a notes app, a document or a scheduling tool often carries trailing spaces that only show their effect once the post is live.
Common problems and how to fix them
- Paragraphs still stuck together: make sure you pasted the formatted text (via “Copy text”), not your original, and that autocorrect did not add a space at the end of a line after pasting.
- A box or symbol shows on blank lines: the font on that device does not render the chosen character as blank. Switch back to the Braille blank, or use the middle dot, which is visible but clean.
- Line breaks lost after editing the post: when you edit a caption in the app, Instagram saves the text again and blank lines can be lost in the process. Paste the formatted version again rather than recreating blank lines by hand.
- Too many hashtags: above 5, keep the most specific and relevant ones rather than generic tags, which is also what Instagram recommended in its announcement.
- Bio stuck at 150 characters: every invisible character and most emoji eat into the limit; shorten a line or remove a blank line while watching the counter.
Privacy: your caption is formatted entirely in your browser; it is never sent to a server, logged or stored, and only your option choices are remembered on this device. Limits: Instagram does not document how it treats blank lines or counts characters, so the invisible character method is a widely used workaround rather than an official feature, and results can differ between iPhone, Android and the web version. The figures shown (2,200 and 150 characters, 5 hashtags, 20 mentions, about 125 characters before “more”) reflect what is known as of 2026.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add line breaks to an Instagram caption?
Write your caption with an empty line between paragraphs, paste it into the tool, click “Copy text” and paste the result into Instagram. Each empty line receives an invisible Braille blank and spaces at the ends of lines are removed, two details that often make Instagram merge paragraphs. Check the post once it is live: Instagram does not document this behavior and it can vary between app versions.
Why does Instagram remove my line breaks?
Instagram does not explain it, but users and social media tools keep reporting the same two causes: a space typed just before pressing Return, and lines that are completely empty, which some versions of the app collapse when the caption is saved. Copying from a notes app or a scheduling tool can add those spaces without you noticing. Removing trailing spaces and putting a character on each empty line avoids both problems.
What is the invisible character for Instagram line breaks?
The most widely used one is U+2800, the Braille Pattern Blank: a Braille cell with no dots, which most fonts display as blank space. Unicode classifies it as a symbol rather than a space, so text cleanup that strips spaces leaves it in place. The tool also offers the Hangul filler U+3164, plus two visible options, a middle dot and a period.
How many characters can an Instagram caption have?
Currently 2,200 characters, the figure given in Meta’s developer documentation, including spaces, emoji, hashtags and the invisible characters on blank lines. In the feed only about the first 125 characters, or the first two lines, show before “more”, so put your hook first. A bio is limited to 150 characters.
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram in 2026?
In December 2025 Instagram announced on Threads, through its @creators account, that it would gradually limit captions of posts and reels to 5 hashtags, down from 30. Because the rollout is gradual, some accounts may still accept more for a while, and Meta’s developer documentation still mentions 30 for apps that publish through its API. The tool warns you above 5.
How do I put line breaks in my Instagram bio?
Choose “Profile bio”, write each line, leave an empty line wherever you want space, then copy the result and paste it into Edit profile, under Bio. The counter checks the 150-character limit, invisible characters included. If a line still sticks to the previous one, make sure no space is left at the end of the line and save your profile again.
